Football Betting: 3rd May

The Football League is still to reach its conclusion but ‘the lottery’ of the play-offs is about to get underway in non-league and offers some decent opportunities to find a bit of value.

Personally, I hate the play-offs being referred to as a lottery.  I may even have referred to them as a lottery myself at times to make a point, but they really aren’t a lottery.  They may be a little unfair in the grand scheme of things as a team who has been challenging for promotion all season and finishes a close third can miss out on promotion to a team who sneaks in to sixth at the last minute, but they are far from a lottery.

Our starting focus for betting on the play-offs starts way down the footballing pyramid with the National League North.

Kidderminster to Win Away to Chorley – Best Price 7/5 (BetVictor)

I don’t expect many to have an in-depth knowledge of the lower leagues, so you will have to take this on trust but I think Kidderminster offer some cracking value here.

Kidderminster had a strong season and could be said to be one of the most effective sides in this division, finishing second behind Fylde who would have had far greater resources to play with, as would others who finished behind the Harriers.  Their away form has been nowhere near as good their home form, which could be a danger here, but with the best defence in the league they have won away from home enough to suggest they can get the job done here.

In contrast to Kidderminster, Chorley did not even finish in the play-off positions and only qualified due to Darlington being barred for having inadequate facilities at their ground.  They were in the mix for much of the season and finished just eight points behind Kidderminster in a tight league, but their form of late has not been that strong and at this stage of the season it is all about momentum.  The bonus of qualifying for the play-offs when finishing outside of the positions may give them a carefree attitude and positivity to play with, but I expect Kidderminster to be too good.

There wasn’t a great deal between these two sides at the end of the season in terms of points and Chorley had a strong home record over the course of the season, however, the play-offs are often all about momentum and Kidderminster have that to take into this game.  It will be tight but I expect The Harriers to come out on top and offer some decent value.
